Proper rug care extends the life of your investment and keeps it looking fresh and beautiful. Whether you own a delicate heirloom or a modern synthetic rug, regular maintenance prevents damage and maintains appearance. Here's everything you need to know about caring for your rugs.

Regular Vacuuming

Vacuuming is the foundation of rug care. Aim to vacuum high-traffic areas twice weekly and less-used areas weekly. Use a vacuum with adjustable height settings, raising it for delicate fibres and lowering it for durable materials. Always vacuum in the direction of the pile, never against it. This prevents fraying and maintains the rug's appearance.

Spot Cleaning Spills Immediately

Address spills as soon as they occur. Blot the area with a clean, white cloth rather than rubbing, which pushes the stain deeper into fibres. Use cool water and a mild cleaning solution appropriate for your rug material. Test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won't cause discolouration.

Handling Common Stains

For liquid spills, blot thoroughly with absorbent cloth. For dry substances, vacuum first, then treat any remaining residue. Wine and coffee stains respond well to white vinegar mixed with water. Grease stains benefit from baking soda sprinkled over the area and left for several hours before vacuuming.

Rotating Your Rug

Rotate your rug every 3 to 6 months to ensure even wear. High-traffic areas fade and compress over time, so rotation distributes this wear across the entire rug, extending its lifespan significantly.

Professional Cleaning

Schedule professional cleaning annually for moderate-use rugs and every 12 to 18 months for heavily-used ones. Professional cleaners have specialised equipment and expertise to deep clean without damaging fibres. They can also treat stubborn stains and restore your rug's appearance.

Protecting from Sunlight

Direct sunlight causes fading over time. Use curtains, blinds, or UV-protective window films to minimise sun exposure. If your rug receives significant sunlight, rotate it more frequently to prevent uneven fading.

Addressing Odours

Sprinkle baking soda over your rug, leave for 15 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly. For persistent odours, professional cleaning is your best option.

Consistent, gentle care keeps your rug beautiful for years to come.
